melbourne fringe FESTIVAL at temperance hall
A boot. A feather. A relic . . . a bag full of useless stuff.

text
Dunes Rolling Down Dunes spirals deeply into the meeting point of a conjured mythology. Stuck in a relentless state of dissolving choreography and purpose, performers Benjamin Hurley and Arabella Frahn-Starkie swoop through their embodied and imagined histories like Icarus falling from the sun . . .
Two musicians sync in and out of rhythm, as they weave together sound scores from symbolic narratives. Time vacuumed into a blurry visioned vortex, pulsing in other worldly priestess tempos. An eerie vocalisation captured within a textual world that continuously folds in on itself . . .
A boot. A feather. A relic . . . a bag full of useless stuff.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
BENJAMIN HURLEY
Benjamin is a queer independent dancer, choreographer and teacher based in Naarm. Their practice investigates the aliveness of the dancing body as a way of deepening their connection to personal philosophy and spirituality. They use a queer, witty, tongue-in-cheek sense of humour, to question inevitable paradoxes of humanity. Their work breeds existentialism, while poetically weaving together abstract movement and meaning. Benjamin has an internationally recognised career, working with world renowned choreographers and artists, including Phillip Adams BalletLab, Dance Theatre Heidelberg under the direction of Ivan Perez, Joel Bray Dance, Sway Pole, Arts Fission Singapore, Alessandro Sciarroni, and they have performed repertoire by Trisha Brown Dance Company at the Venice Art Biennale. They have also fostered lasting collaborative relationships with independent artists including Victoria Chiu, Deanne Butterworth, Lee Serle, Scott Elstermann, Emma Riches, Arabella Frahn-Starkie and Isabelle Beauverd amongst others. Their practice has been funded by numerous funding bodies, residencies and scholarships, and they have presented works across multiple contexts, notably, a solo work ‘UpAndUpAndUpAndUp’ which received a five star review in ArtsHub, and a nomination for a Green Room Award for Best Performance. |
